MiM Mailbag: Shared residency

Hi all!  I love your blog, and have already utilized so much of what I've learned from your posts.  I'm an M1 with a seven month old.  Although I am very far from making any decisions regarding specialty options, the fact that I will be deciding in the next couple years has been on my mind lately.  And while I know it shouldn't be the only factor I consider, I would be lying if I said that lifestyle wasn't an important player for me.  So, when I heard about the possibility of a shared residency, I became very curious (and even, yes, a little excited).  I am sure these things are few and far between, as well as incredibly competitive, and chock full of faults of their own, but what do you ladies think about them?  Anyone do one, or know someone who did?  I would love to know more about them, but am hesitant to ask people at my school, for fear that they'll make assumptions about me. Thank you!

    do you both spend twice as long in residency then? That would kind of suck... (coming from a R2 who is desperate to get into the real world)

    Having gone through residency with 3 little ones I would opt to pick a specialty that was family friendly. I imagine it would be frustrating taking longer to finish even with every other month off. It really depends on your support system and financial considerations.

    I am a MS 3 and the mommy of a 3 three year old. I have also been considering doing a shared residency (in pediatrics). I have a friend who shared a residency in Family Medicine. Over the course of the past year I have been speaking with her and the residency director at my school about my options. It seems that you have to get kind of creative as not many people try to match with a partner. Finding a partner is one of the biggest obstacles. I think it is possible and would love to get any ideas about how to connect with other interested students.

    I'm not really sure how much longer you'd have to train. I'm hoping to find out though.

    Hi everyone, I'm the mother of two and I am looking for someone who would be interested in sharing an Internal Medicine residency with me in Baltimore. My husband is a PGY-2 in Baltimore, so I have to stay in the area. There is one program, Johns Hopkins Bayview, that advertises that they offer such positions, but I'm willing to apply to all the imed programs in the city and see if any program directors would also be interested. We have health insurance through his program, so if there is an issue with benefits, I'm fine with the other person taking them.

    I am still trying to figure out all of the logistics of the shared residency. I am Mandie, from above, who is trying to share a peds residency in 2013. Apparently you apply under one AAMC number so essentially you match as one person. It is up to the partner team to work out the details with each program individually. I now have information on 3 pairs who have done this over the past 15 years. The pair I know the most about spent 5.5 years in their family med residency working 3 days on 4 days off. Other programs may require working one month on one month off or biweekly. I don't think there are any set rules. The pay is 1/2, as you would expect, and the partner pair have to work out some sort of agreement on splitting benefits. Beyond this I have no more information. Please let me know if anyone else knows anything beyond this.

    I am looking for a partner for a shared FM/IM residency. I am willing to look into Peds if IM/FM does not work out. I will be graduating in 2013, looking to move to the Colorado/Oregon/Massachusetts. I am quite flexible with location and benefits because my husband works out of home.
